Science Unit: Forces Causing Motion
Grade 3 students will be starting a science unit on Forces this week.
Big Ideas:
Big Ideas:
- There are several types of forces that cause movement.
- Forces cause objects to speed up, slow down, or change direction through direct contact or through interaction at a distance.
- Forces in nature, such as high winds or water, can have a significant impact on humans and the environment, and need to be regarded with respect.
Through hands on exploration, experiments, and videos, students will gain an understanding of the following overall expectations:
1. assess the impact of various forces on society and the environment;
2. investigate devices that use forces to create controlled movement;
3. demonstrate an understanding of how forces cause movement and changes in movement.

Welcome to Grade 3!
September 6, 2016
Dear Families,
Welcome back to school! My name is Ms. Armstrong and I will be teaching Grade 3 this year at Bayview Hill. I have been teaching for well over 12 years at Bayview Hill and overseas. I am also a mother of a six year old boy and a four year old girl. I look forward to meeting all of you in person over the coming months.
Over the past few years, I have become very aware of the impact teachers can have on the lives of their students. I will make every attempt to get to know your child and determine his/her interests, strengths, and weaknesses. This information will help me with designing assignments and assessments that meet the needs of the whole class.
I always encourage responsible and accountable behaviour and I expect students to arrive at school prepared to learn. Please see the reverse side for a list of optional learning materials that students may wish to leave at school inside their desks.
A fair amount of administrative information will come home this week and over the course of the school year. Please let me know if you have any questions about it and return it via your child at your earliest convenience. Students require a school agenda for homework and communication. Please pay $5 online at your earliest convenience.
You are always welcome to contact me and/or book an appointment. Rather than sending home regular paper newsletters, I update my blog with unit outlines, new websites, and occasional homework tasks. It is an easy way to catch a glimpse of what we are learning in class. Please check my blog regularly with your child. Together, let’s support and challenge your child to be the best he/she can be!
Ms. K. Armstrong
