Updates from Room 234

Greetings Parents,

Here is a glimpse at our current units of study:

In Reading, we are focused on asking meaningful questions.  We ask these "thick" questions before, during, and after we read a text.  Questioning helps us to better understand what we read and we can develop our answers using the text and our background knowledge (schema).

In Writing, we have concentrated the elements of a proper paragraph using Power Writing.  Students are now planning and writing paragraphs in preparation for the culminating task: An Autobiography.  Look out for this wonderful piece of writing in the next month.

In Mathematics, students continue to work on addition and subtraction strategies, estimation and word problems.  There will be a test on Monday, December 5.  The study note will be sent home on Monday.  Students are encouraged to study their work in the red duotangs and to use the study note to guide their review.

In Social Studies, student have learned a lot about First Nation and Metis communities in the past.  This past week, we examined life for French settlers in Chateau-Richer.  In the coming weeks, we will examine other early settler communities in Upper and Lower Canada.  Students are comparing past life to present life and discussing the many challenges that the settlers faced while building their communities.

Please keep the following dates in mind:

Friday, December 2 - CCAT Gifted Test (this is not a test that you can study/ prepare for)
Monday, December 5 - Holidays Sing-a-long (Parents are welcome to attend this performance at 2:00)
Thursday, December 8 - Heritage Schoolhouse Field Trip

Looking forward to our interview either on Thursday or Friday!
